Sihanoukville port sees steady growth

Revenue at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port increased 13.6 per cent year on year between January and June, port officials confirmed yesterday.

As the state-owned enterprise gears up for listing on the Cambodia Securities Exchange, the neighbouring Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone will play an increasingly important role in boosting throughput, insiders said.

The port – Cambodia’s largest – brought in about US$14 million in revenues during the period, Chief Executive Officer Lou Kim Chhun said. Garment and rice exports accounted for the bulk of outgoing shipments.

“[Gross domestic product] is around 6 per cent. The port’s growth is linked closely to the growth of the whole country,” he said yesterday by phone.

Next to the port is the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, which officially launched in May.

The SEZ has 16 factories in operation and four more preparing to open, Michelle Zhang, a manager at the SEZ said in an email yesterday.

Like Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone, Sihanoukville’s is emerging as a hot spot for diversified exports.

Among garment factories – the country’s staple GDP generator – are two Japanese electronics companies and one Chinese-Cambodian bio-technology joint venture, Zhang said.

“It’s obvious that the more investors in the SEZ, the more this will contribute to growth at the port,” she said.

About 80 per cent of the SEZ’s exports leave the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, while nearly all materials used in SEZ factories enter through the port, Zhang added.

Rice industry calls for help

Milled-rice exporters have called on the government to continue its efforts in reducing electricity and transportation costs, two of the main obstacles facing the government’s goal of exporting 1 million tonnes of milled rice by 2015.

At a working group on rice exports on Friday, 40 of the Kingdom’s millers and exporters looked to the government for more support on what they said is holding the industry back.

“As exporters, we definitely want to meet the government’s goal. But we can’t do it unless we try to work these issues out together,” chairman of both the working group and of Loran Import-Export Co Lim Bun Heng said at the meeting.

High production costs in Cambodia, which included the costs of milling, put a burden on export markets, he said, adding that shipping cost per container were up to US$60 higher than neighbouring rice producers.

Kim Savuth, managing director of Khmer Food, pointed to Electricite du Cambodge as a possible catalyst in reducing power prices. “Electricite du Cambodge should think about helping the local producers.

They should not only try to make their own profits,” he said. “I want our production cost down so we can be much more competitive and still make a profit.”

The government has already made progress in relieving the agricultural sector of some costs, Phouy Puy, president of the Cambodia Millers Associations and president of Baitong Co, said.

The government has helped facilitate exports by reducing unnecessary fees and speeding up paperwork, although the issues still constrain the industry.

Phouy Puy called on exporters to co-operate on strengthening production capacity and raising the quality of the rice.

Lim Bun Heng estimated that Cambodia has exported about 60,000 tonnes of milled rice to the global market.

Although the government said the country would more than double its rice exports to 400,000 tonnes this year, experts have expressed misgivings about the figure as exports to Europe, Cambodia’s primary buyer, declined at the beginning of the year.

Phnom Penh Autonomous Port to push rice exports

Phnom Penh Autonomous Port plans to buy a rice-polishing machine from China, and will also look to build a rice storage facility in Kandal province.

These moves, officials said, were intended to push along Cambodia’s rice trade during a period of uncertainty for the industry.

“Actually, the project is not relevant to our port work, but we want to participate in improving our milled-rice quality, especially helping them to export more,” Hei Bavy, director-general of the port, said yesterday.

“We see the industry is still facing some problems in terms of exports – mainly on quality. So this machine is another effort to help them.

“We are close to finalising our discussions on the project. We hope it will take one or two more months.”

Hei Bavy declined to give a dollar figure for the two projects.

Experts have considered the quality of Cambodian rice as one of several barriers to increasing exports, which Prime Minister Hun Sen said will reach a million tonnes by 2015.

Facilities such as large-scale rice mills and polishing machines are inadequate in this country.

Experts have also noted that Cambodia lacks warehouses to store large quantities of rice before the product is shipped abroad.

The proposed warehouse would have a 10,000-tonne capacity, according to Hei Bavy.

Other obstacles facing Cambodia’s rice sector include the cost of milling rice, which have put the Kingdom’s rice prices above regional competitors such as Thailand and Vietnam.

Millers this year have reported a substantial drop in rice exports to Europe, which was Cambodia’s main buyer in 2011.

Logistic bottlenecks, as well as the increased price of shipping to Europe, will keep Cambodian rice prices high this year.

Cargo shipment via the port rose by 10.48 per cent in the first five months of the year to 31,093 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), up from 28,144 in the corresponding period last year, data from the port shows.

Grow Vegetables around Rice Fields to Prevent Pest Outbreaks, PhilRice Says

The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) institute recommends planting vegetables around rice fields to reduce attack by pests and insects on rice plants and to promote organic farming.

A scientist from PhilRice says that vegetable plants provide food and shelter to several predators of rice infesting pests and insects. The scientist said that farmers should adopt “ecological engineering” strategy that helps reduce use of pesticides, and earn some extra money.

The scientist said, “Farmers apply pesticides about six times in a season. Pesticides must only be used as a corrective measure during pest outbreaks. To prevent outbreaks, we recommend the conservation of natural enemies to lessen the unnecessary and costly use of pesticides.”

The scientist said that okra (lady's fingers), kalabasa (melon), talong (egg plant) are considered good vegetables for planting, while spiders, coccinelid beetles, long-legged flies and yellowish-brown ants are beneficial insects in rice farming.

Canadia Bank (ធនាគារ​កាណាឌីយ៉ា) is one of the largest local banks in Cambodia. The bank was established in 1991 and became privatized in 1998. It has 25 branches across the country.

Canadia Bank was established on 11 November 1991, as the Canadia Gold & Trust Corporation Limited, under a joint-venture with overseas Cambodians and the National Bank of Cambodia, and as a sole office financial institution managed by the former staff of the National Bank of Cambodia and Canadian Cambodian shareholders. Canadia Bank backs rice mill in Takeo

Canadia Bank will launch a rice mill in Cambodia’s Takeo province in October, a move that insiders said could help curb the flow of unmilled rice to neighbouring Vietnam.

Bank officials yesterday said they will buy US$3 million in milling equipment, and the total cost of the facility was expected to be $10 million.

Equipment would be imported from several countries including Japan, Taiwan and China, and the mill would look to export to the European Union, China and the Philippines.

The plant would have a capacity of 600 tonnes of milled rice per day by 2013, Bun Khim, rice milling manager at Canadia Bank, said yesterday, adding that operation procedures were still unknown because the factory was in the planning stages. “Now we don’t know how to operate the plant because we are preparing the machines,” he said.

Doung Heng, the president of Takeo province’s Rice Millers Association, said that the operation of Canadia Bank’s rice milling would not be a competitive force among local rice millers, but it would curb the flow of unmilled rice to Vietnam.

“The operation is good for reducing the amount of unmilled rice to neighbouring countries. We cannot stop exporting paddy all at once, but we can reduce it by means of investment.”

Thai rice exporter invests in Cambodia

Thailand's top rice exporter in 2011 invests in Cambodia: ready-to-eat-meals & processing for export in Cambodia rather than Vietnam.

STC Group, Thailand's biggest rice exporter, has become the latest company to explore rice investment opportunities in Cambodia.

Talks to form a venture with a Cambodian partner, which have started since last year, are likely to be finalised some time this year, an executive said.

"The venture will focus on rice processing, logistics and rice exports from Cambodia," said Wanlop Pichpongsa, deputy managing director of Capital Rice Co, STC Group's rice-exporting flagship.

STC is among several Thai investors seeking to enter the thriving rice industry of Cambodia, whose government has planned to export about one million tonnes over the next few years.

Among the prominent companies are Asia Golden Rice, a leading rice exporter which has announced to pour in 1.5 billion baht to process one million tonnes of rice a year in Cambodia's southern province of Kampot.

Actually, Cambodia's rice industry has strong potential thanks to its naturally rich soil. The country has a number of millers and processing plants but they are not enough

Most paddy is sold to be processed in Vietnam for exports and Mr Wanlop said the joint investment could help Cambodia earn more than exporting the rice in commodity form.

STC has added ready-to-eat varieties in retort pouches to cater to the local market.

The development is seen as a win-win business. While Cambodia still wants expertise in rice processing and marketing, some Thai exporters need to broaden their businesses to minimise risks locally. Thai rice exports are projected to drop sharply this year due to dwindling global demand and uncompetitive prices.

The Thai Rice Exporters Association also said the high paddy price offered under the current rice-pledging programme has eroded the competitiveness of Thai rice.

These factors would push down Thai rice exports this year to only 7 million tonnes, a 30% drop from 10.6 million tonnes shipped in 2011.

"In particular, less demand from Indonesia and Bangladesh is a factor that causes the decline," said Mr Wanlop, also the secretary-general of the association.

Indonesia imported more than 900,000 tonnes of rice from Thailand last year, a 230% jump year-on-year, while Bangladesh bought 736,782 tonnes, up 422% over the levels in 2011.

STC was a major beneficiary of the large orders from the two countries, catapulting it to the top spot in the exporters' rankings in 2011, with a total of 2.02 million tonnes shipped, or 19% of the 10.6 million tonnes the country exported last year.

But such a bonanza is unlikely to repeat his year as production in Indonesia and Bangladesh is rising, resulting in smaller imports, he noted.

The Food Agriculture Organisation forecasts the 2012 world rice output will rise 2.46% from last year to 461.44 million tonnes of paddy. Production from Indonesia and Bangladesh would increase by 5% and 2% to 37 million and 34 million tonnes of paddy respectively.

Consequently, world rice trade this year is expected at 32.8 million tonnes, down from 34.5 million tonnes in 2011.

Whether India would continue to export after completing sales of two million tonnes in the first quarter of this year is a condition that will affect the performance of Thai rice exports, he said.

India offered low selling prices at an average of US$433 a tonne for 5%-grade white rice, compared with $533 a tonne of Thai rice. India's 5%-grade parboiled rice was sold at $450 a tonne, about $100 lower than of the premium grade of Thai parboiled rice.

But there is a chance to see bullish trade in the first half this year, driven by possible large orders from Nigeria, Thailand's biggest rice buyer which bought 1.54 million tonnes of rice in 2011.

According to Mr Wanlop, the Nigerian government will likely increase the levy on rice imports in July, triggering a rush to import the commodity in the first half.

Besides expanding business to neighbouring country, STC has planned to complete the 500-million-baht improvement of its two rice-processing facilities in Ayutthaya and Samut Prakan provinces this year.

The project would enable the group to maintain a 18-19% share in the country's exports. Besides, it will focus more on retail sales by adding ready-to-eat rice products in retort pouches after its fragrant and organic rice products received a good market response, with about 40,000 tonnes in local sales

Cambodia hosts rice forum to discuss ways to raise output,exports

PHNOM PENH, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Experts from Cambodia and international organizations gathered here Monday to discuss the current status of rice research and development and to evaluate the country's challenges in rice production and export.

The Cambodian Rice Research Forum was organized by Rice Research Institute(IRRI)and Cambodia's Agriculture Ministry with the support of the Australian government.

"The event created a discussion forum between international scientists with national scientists, development partners and various stakeholders to assess the situation of rice research and production through identification of key challenges facing the Cambodian rice industry and their common solutions to accelerate the country's development of rice sector," Minister of Agriculture Chan Sarun said in his opening remarks.

He said Cambodia's rice output is about 3.2 tons per hectare in 2011, still low compared to 5.3 tons of neighboring Vietnam, 3.5 tons of Laos.

"I am confident that the forum will find inputs to increase rice production in the country," he said.

The forum would offer an opportunity for various stakeholders to exchange views on achieving Cambodia's goal of exporting at least 1 million tons of milled rice in 2015.

Penny Richards, ambassador of Australia to Cambodia, said the forum was an important way of disseminating key findings from existing research as well as prioritizing future research necessary to support the Cambodian government's goal of exporting 1 million tons of milled rice per year by 2015.

Chan Sarun said the country produced some 8.8 million tons of rice last year, and it has about 4 million tons of rice available for exports this year.

In August, 2010, the government adopted a rice export promotion strategy, aiming at raising rice exports to 1 million tons by 2015. However backward post-harvesting technology and lack of capital prevented the country from raising its rice exports.

Cambodia Rice Exports to Grow Over 100% in 2012 Amid Chinese Demand

Cambodian agriculture officials have revealed that the country’s rice exports are expected to grow over 100% to 400,000 tons in 2012, with Chinese demand for rice helping the nation compensate for the slow start in the first quarter of this year amid falling regional prices.

Cambodia’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said that tax waivers by Europe would continue to help the country’s rice exports. He said that while Europe would remain the biggest rice market for Cambodia, China’s unexpected need for rice this year would help the country recover from a slump in first quarter exports.

Last year, Cambodia exported about 173,000 tons of rice mainly due to import tax waivers by Europe. China is expected to become a top rice importer in 2012 with over 2 million tons of rice imports.

The Cambodian Agriculture minister declined to share figures for the first quarter 2012 exports, but acknowledged that there were few export orders in the first quarter, as prices from international competitors remained low. However, the chief of a Cambodia private rice exporting company revealed that the country shipped about 37,000 tons of rice in the first quarter 2012, about 12,000 tons more than the 25,784 tons ice exports during the same period in 2011.

Earlier this month, the first direct test shipment of rice from Cambodia reached Chinese shores, but failed to qualify China’s standards, not due to the quality of Cambodian rice but because of a glitch in paper work, according to Cambodian sources. The export company chief said, “It’s not a problem with the quality of Cambodia’s rice…There’s something missing between the political level and technical level for the shipment.”

Cambodia Rice: Cambodia's Rice Export Scheme Sees Good Omen with Chinese Investments

(CambodiaRice:2011): PHNOM PENH, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia has seen a positive sign towards achieving its self-imposed target of one million-ton- rice exports by 2015 as the sector has been attracting a number of large investments from China.

In last August, the government launched the rice export policy in a bid to boost the exports of one million tons of milled rice by 2015.

"The main challenges to achieve this target are the shortages of sophisticated post-harvest technologies and capital to buy rice paddy from farmers," Kong Putheara, director of the Commerce Ministry's Planning and Statistics Department, told Xinhua in an interview on Friday.

However, the issues have gradually been broken through as a number of large Chinese firms have signed up to build a hi-tech rice processing plant and to purchase Cambodian rice for Chinese market.

Among those firms is the China Grain Reserves Corporation ( Sinograin) Guangzhou Branch.

The firm signed up on Aug. 16 to buy up to 200,000 tons of milled rice per year from Cambodia and has put its initial investment of 20 million U.S. dollars with a local T.T.Y Corporation to buy rice paddy from farmers to process for the exports to China.

And the China's Yunnan Overseas Investment Co., Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a local Soma Group of Cambodia to build a high-tech rice processing plant to process rice for China.

Cambodia Rice: Draft law on farmer’s co-ops near completion

Cambodia's first draft law for the regulation of agriculture cooperatives is near completion, and is expected to reach the National Assembly this year, officials said.

The draft law aims to formalise the Kingdom’s more than 250 cooperatives and provide a framework for those created in the future, officials said.

“This law is important because it is based on the international system that governs cooperatives,” Khem Chenda, director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ administration department, said.

“Many countries use it to make it easier for farmers to do business,” he said, adding the Food and Agriculture Organisation consulted on the draft law.
Cooperatives allow farmers greater bargaining power with customers and suppliers, and they distribute loans to members who would otherwise seek out microfinance instutions. Cooperatives presently are governed by royal decree.

While Khem Chenda declined to offer much of the draft law’s specifics, as it was not finished, he did say cooperatives would need to register with the Ministry of Agriculture. However, they would not be required to pay taxes or administration fees.

The draft law will be sent to the Council of Ministers before reaching the National Assembly later in the year, he said.

Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture president Yang Saing Koma emphasised that the law should ensure the continued autonomy of the Kingdom’s cooperatives.

“They have to avoid taking over those cooperatives,” he said.

Cambodia Rice: Cambodian rice output grows in 2011 despite floods

Cambodia's total paddy rice output reached 8.4 million tonnes in 2011, up from 8.25 million tonnes last year, according an initial assessment by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Provincial MAFF officials from across the Kingdom met in Phnom Penh on Saturday, when data was collected for an early tally of the country’s rice crop.

Ngin Chhay, director of MAFF’s rice department, said the first-phase results showed an average of 2.97 tonnes to 3.1 tonnes of paddy rice per hectare, planted on 2.7 million hectares, for a total of 8.4 million tonnes.

Cambodia harvested 8.25 million tonnes of paddy in 2010, Prime Minister Hun Sen said during the 16th Government-Private Sector Forum held on November 23 in Phnom Penh.

“After the dry-season paddy rice has been harvested, we will have the final results. But in general, first report and last report are very close,” he said.

The ministry will deliver those results in April, he added. Cambodia will hold about 4 million tonnes of surplus paddy, with another 2.57 million tonnes for export, according to Ngin Chhay.

CEDAC president Dr Yang Saing Koma agreed with the ministry’s projections, saying the crops that lay outside flood-affected areas saw higher yields.

At the same time, other farmers would scramble to recover from the damage done by the floods, which would help to boost dry-season output, he said.

However, Yang Saing Koma estimated that Cambodia had been lucky because of the heavy rains seen this year, and said the country would need to focus on water management in order for the dry season harvest to reach its full potential.

“Climate is the most crucial factor for the agricultural sector in Cambodia. The best path to developing Cambodia’s agriculture is through good water management,” he said, adding that seed selection was also crucial.

On March, 31th, the minister of MAFF monitored the showing dry season field in Siemreap province. In that chance, he advised farmers about the way to farm the dry season field to be better than keeping the land free.

In monitoring chance of farming the showing dry season field over 10 ha along the Romdeng dike which was donated by ECOSORN project in Choub village, Khna Por commune, Sotnikom district, Siemreap province, Mr.Chann Sarun advised to all people that farmers have to focus on a correct dry season field farming in order to get high yield. He spoke that in dry season field farming, people have to use purification seed, to prepare the land to be flat and should farm from 2 to 4 times. Besides, people ought to focus on plucking weeds out and watering on clump of rice plants for to pre-solving when it’s drought.


When monitoring the dry season field, minister observed that when clumps of rice plants were spreading, water lacking at the end of season happened. By seeing this situation, minister was monitory the general department of agriculture (department of agricultural machine) to send 4 pumps for intervention pumping from Romdeng irrigation system to field in order to save rice which is lacking water in urgent.

In that area, people do not have a habit to farm the dry season field by keeping blank land. With a purpose for people to have possibilities to farm many times and improve their livelihood, Mr. Chann Sarun built an idea to encourage people to focus on the dry season farming according to policies of Samdach Decho Hun Sen which want to see all people to get a high living standard. Cambodia Rice: Japan Offers Support for Farmers in three Tonle Sap provinces

The Japan International Cooperation Agency pledged US$4.4 million on yesterday to help improve the productivity and income of farmers in areas along the Tonle Sap lake in Battambang, Pursat and Kampong Chhnang provinces.

Yasujiro Suzuki, chief representative of JICA Cambodia, said at signing ceremony that the JICA-sponsored project would help the Cambodian government reach its goal of boosting rice exports to 1 million tonnes by 2015.

San Vanty, undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said that the project – which will focus on agriculture production techniques, seed quality and irrigation – would target 30 communes in Battambang province, four in Pursat and two in Kampong Chhnang.

“In the near future, agricultural productivity and income of farmers in the target areas will be improved through collaboration and implementation of this project,” he said. The project is to commence in September and last for four and a half years.



Cheam Chan Sophorn, director of the Battambang provincial agriculture department, said he hoped that by the end of the JICA project, the province would be able to “double or triple the amount of rice for export to regional and international markets”.



Meanwhile, farmers living in the three target provinces said yesterday that they were concerned about this year’s ongoing drought.

“I am concerned about not having enough water to supply to my rice seedlings this year ... because of drought and a lack of irrigation systems,” said Kuch Veng, a farmer from Krakor district in Pursat province.

Tan Soksan, a farmer in Kampong Chhnang’s Rolea Phear district, agreed that it had been difficult to grow rice this year due to water shortages.

“I and other farmers in my village have serious concerns about the lack of rains,” he said, and some rice crops had died due to lack of water.

Lay Pisith, deputy director of the Pursat provincial agriculture department, said that officials in Krakor and Bakan districts have been forced to manually pump water into their ricefields in order to counter the effects of the drought.

Ngan Nany, director of the agriculture department in Kampong Chhnang province, said yesterday that recent rains had helped to improve the situation. “We hope that the rice seedlings of our farmers will not have any more problems,” he said. Source: MAFF

Coordinators in Rice crop Research Center in Japan showed a purpose that they want to cooperate with MAFF and to test on Japanese rice seed to apply in Cambodia. Top officer of MAFF got this idea to consider.

Mr. Tosiyoki Maahara, director of SOEI CORPERATION Co, Ltd and PLANT GENOME’s spokesman told Mr. Chann Sarun, Minister of MAFF on March, 16th that in be haft of a coordinator in PLANT GENOME center which is a Japanese Rice crop Research Center, he aimed to cooperate with Cambodia in Japanese rice seed testing in order to participate in promoting and raising up the agricultural field in Cambodia, especially rice crop. In addition, his company will cooperate with Japanese Rice crop Research Center to carry out the research and experiment of Japanese rice seed in Cambodia by utilization of Japanese money package in term of ODA Mekong- Japan in future.

MAFF’s officer told Raksmey Kampuchea that a meeting in office of ministry was welcomed warmly by minister of MAFF, especially Japanese’s focusing in agricultural field in Cambodia. The minister got a Japanese officer’s request to consider, to check the reality result for co-cooperate with specialization sectors in Cambodia. The minister also told the guests that in past time in Cambodia territory used to have Japanese rice seed testing by Vietnamese company in Arng Yang province which its result was high and were fully brought by company.

The minister also confirmed that Cambodia has rice seed researching center too which can guarantee the technical seed experiment that has laboratories in province, has agricultural development communities in base for to join this work practice.

Japanese officer expressed the pleasantness to the minister’s response and pleasure for the ministry’s invitation that want him to visit in Cambodia Development and Research Institute.

Cambodia Rice: New International standard rice mill in Cambodia

CANADIA Bank Plc has begun construction on an US$8 million rice processing facility in Takeo province, aiming to process rice for export to the international market, company officials said.

Set up in the province’s Doun Keo district, the mill will be capable of processing up to 500 tonnes of paddy per day, Canadia Investment Department Manager Rien Samrith said.

“We want to invest in this province because of its potential for agriculture, and we want to push people to produce more rice,” he said.

Construction on the facility began earlier this month, and will be finished by September this year.

The firm claims to have a three-month timeline to complete the factory, as operations are to begin in October to meet demand from China, he said.

“We have already connected with business partners from China to export rice to them,” he said.

Takeo Governor Srey Ban said on Sunday that the province had nearly 100 rice mills, but most were not able to process the agricultural staple at international quality.

“We welcome the new investment project,” he said, adding the province had enough agricultural land to eventually produce 600,000 tonnes of milled rice yearly.

Canadia is also setting up a rice mill in Battambang province with capacity of 60 tonnes per day, with work on the $400,000 facility expected to begin next month.

Prime Minister Hun Sen has set a target of exporting 1 million tonnes of milled rice by 2015.

Cambodia Rice: North Korea wants to buy Cambodian Rice

NORTH Korea aims to import rice from Cambodia, as well as explore for mineral resources, officials said yesterday.

High-ranking officials from Pyongyang met with their Cambodian counterparts in Phnom Penh yesterday, signing agreements on economic and trade cooperation.

The two countries had signed seven cooperation agreements beginning in 1993, but they were never implemented, said Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Secretary of State Ouch Borith following meetings.

The bilateral agreements range from cultural cooperation to trade promotion to establishing a joint IT committee.

“The agreements have never been actually implemented. Therefore, [yesterday] we agreed to push for actual implementation in the near future,” he said.

The North Korean signatory was their Deputy Trade Minister Ri Myong San.

North Korea had pledged to assist Cambodia with exploring for gold, iron and aluminum, as well as construct small-scale hydroelectric projects. Cambodia aims to export agricultural products such as rice, corn and beans in return, he said. Earlier this month, the European Commission agreed to provide 10 million euros (US$14.54 million) in emergency good aid to North Korea after find hundreds of thousands at risk of starvation.

Ouch Borth said North Korea has promised to study markets in Cambodia. “We don’t have the investment from the North Korean at the moment beyond its restaurants,” he said.

Cambodia has a long history of strong political relationships with North Korea, dating to former king Norodom Sihanouk’s relationship with former North Korean leader Kim Il Sung.

Ouch Borith said North Korea had offered to sell agricultural machinery to Cambodia, such as tractors, at cheaper prices than Western countries and wanted to provide expertise in developing mines.

“We have only small and medium-sized enterprises, not big industries, but Cambodia’s natural resources are huge, such as minerals, gold, iron and aluminum,” he said.

• Releasing nutrients at a slower, more consistent rate, helping to avoid a boom-and-bust pattern
• Helping to retain soil moisture, reducing the stress due to temporary moisture stress
• Improving the soil structure
• Helping to prevent topsoil erosion (responsible for desertfication and the Dust bowl.
• The necessity of reapplying artificial fertilizers regularly (and perhaps in increasing quantities) to maintain fertility.

• Extensive runoff of soluble nitrogen and phosphorus.
• Costs are lower for if fertilizer is locally available.
